Reading in the dark does not contribute to have bad eyesight, you don’t need to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to stay healthy and shaving the hairs in your leg won’t make it grow longer and faster. These well known theories are part and parcel of the so called 7 medical myths that are revealed as hoax in the Christmas edition of the British Medical Journal published last December. These seven common beliefs and the evidences supporting them found in the archive are combined by Aaron Carrol of Regenstrief Institute in Indianapolis and Rachel Vreeman of Indiana University School of Medicine. “The youth is the hope of the fatherland”, a familiar quote says. Then the youth is the “next in line” for our corrupt and irresponsible leaders who are training the youth to be just like them, irresponsible, corrupt, cheaters, dishonest and self motivated politicians who are just looking for their selfish desires and putting in a corner the common good and welfare of the people. They say politics is a dirty game; yes it is dirty because we want it that way. Politics in the Philippines is already dirty, very dirty. The politicians are often engaged in vote buying, mud slinging and other illegal acts. Sanguniang Kabataan, they say, is the training ground for the youth, these young politicians who are still immature to play in their dirty games. It is there that they learn the dirty game of politics. If not all maybe almost all the SK chairmen and chairwomen now holding the position was engaged in vote buying last election, yet our law deemed vote buying as an illegal act. See, they are getting better in knowing this dirty game! These illegal acts being practiced by our SK chairmen are the handed down tactics of our politicians. Is this the youth we are preparing to be our next leaders? Is this the kind of environment that we are going to put them in? Vote buying, mud slinging and all other acts deemed illegal by law? Is this their so called training ground? A training ground influenced by devils? We want our leaders to be honest and responsible but how could we make angels when we are training them in hell? Is this the youth Dr. Jose Rizal had puts his hopes on when he said that famous quote? Certainly not! There’s only one solution for all of this. Abolish SK and stop training the youth in this world of dishonesty. It is only by then that we can make good leaders and a good government. Our government has put millions of its budget in the SK but look! Is there any good it does to the youth? All we can see is the youth leaders squandering the funds. It would be better if those funds be put on other government agencies where we could that is used in the right way, the way we want our youth leaders will spend it. Yes, SK is the youth’s laboratory for life. A very good laboratory if the teachers would be that efficient and morally upright. But, they are just devils who want the youth to be just like them, little devils. Better close this laboratory and put an end to these devilish teachers who are teaching nothing but a whole damn thing to the youths, because we don’t want devils to run our government.

I dreamed I had an interview with God. “So you would like to interview me?” God asked. “If you have the time” I said. God smiled. “My time is eternity.” “What questions do you have in mind for me?” “What surprises you most about humankind?” God answered... “That they get bored with childhood, they rush to grow up, and then long to be children again.” “That they lose their health to make money... and then lose their money to restore their health.” “That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live in neither the present nor the future.” "That they live as if they will never die, and die as though they had never lived.” God’s hand took mine and we were silent for a while. And then I asked... “As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons you want your children to learn?” “To learn they cannot make anyone love them. All they can do is let themselves be loved.” “To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others.” “To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness.” “To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in those they love, and it can take many years to heal them.” “To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least.” “To learn that there are people who love them dearly, but simply have not yet learned how to express or show their feelings.” “To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently.” “To learn that it is not enough that they forgive one another, but they must also forgive themselves.” "Thank you for your time," I said humbly. "Is there anything else you would like your children to know?" God smiled and said, “Just know that I am here... always.”

Let's face it -- English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese... One blouse, 2 blice?

Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend, that you comb through annals of history but not a single annal? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? If you wrote a letter, perhaps you bote your tongue?

Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? Park on driveways and drive on parkways?

How can a "slim chance" and a "fat chance" be the same, while a "wise man" and "wise guy" are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while "quite a lot" and "quite a few" are alike? How can the weather be "hot as hell" one day and "cold as hell" another?

Have you noticed that we talk about certain things only when they are absent? Have you ever seen a horseful carriage or a strapful gown? Met a sung hero or experienced requited love? Have you ever run into someone who was combobulated, gruntled, ruly or peccable? And where are all those people who are spring chickens or who would actually hurt a fly?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which an alarm clock goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race (which, of course, isn't a race at all). That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it?

Now I know why I flunked my English. It's not my fault, the silly language doesn't quite know whether it's coming or going.
